The entire history of Rome started from the shore of the Tiber River, here populations arriving from different areas of the peninsula could meet, trade and start to settle down. That’s why Trastevere is a district with centuries of history! This was the shore of the foreigners, hence the Jewish and the Christian community initially settled down here and gave to this district its typical look. More than a thousand years after the foundation of the city, the richest man in Italy in the ‘500, chose this area to place his incredible villa painted by some great artists, including Raphael.
We meet on the Tiber Island, a boat shaped island in the middle of the Tiber River, symbol of the foundation of Rome. Walking on one of the most ancient bridges left by the Romans, we enter into the district of Trastevere, which contains the history of Rome from the foundation to the modern age but it is also considered the most typical and popular area where to discover life, habits, stories, legends and food of the Romans.
Once in Trastevere we walk into the alleys to learn how the district has been transformed through the centuries and the reason why it rapresents the most typical neighborhood of the city. Here there’re some of the most ancient churches in Rome, but also you can experience the daily life of the Romans.
Walking through Trastevere we get to Villa Farnesina, the most beautiful and intact example of Renaissance Villa we have in Rome. It was built for Agostino Chigi, the banker of the pope, who wanted to celebrate his love for Francesca Ordeaschi by commissioning to Raphael one of the most stunning frescoes he ever did! This villa is a gem you can’t miss in Rome, it’s immerged into its quiet gardens, never crowded, and it gives a big chance to discover some of the most incredible gossips of the ‘500 in Rome.
