Rome is a wonderful city but it hides many esoteric and mysterious places. Would you like to see one of Rome’s most spooky places? Come and see the “Museum” of the Souls of the Purgatory… Some wouldn’t expect the city to hide places as frightening as they are fascinating. But this one is definitely one of the scariest in Rome. The Church of the Sacred Heart of Suffrage
The Church of the Sacred Heart of Suffrage located in Lungotevere Prati, was built in Gothic style in 1890 by architect Giuseppe Gualandi. The church, opened to the public on 1 November 1917, has a façade, protected by a beautiful high gate, consisting of a taller central body crowned by a series of aediculae between two spires. The Church is beautiful but it hides one of the spookiest sites of the city… The so-called Museum of the Souls in Purgatory.

One of Rome’s spookiest places: the “Museum” of the Souls in Purgatory
This very special museum is truly unique. It is said to contain the only visible evidence of the Souls in Purgatory!!
At the end of the 19th century, a small chapel in the Church, dedicated to the Virgin, caught fire. When the fire was extinguished, a man’s head was engraved above one of the altar pillars (a photograph of it can still be seen). It was said to be the image of a soul in purgatory. A French priest, Victor Jouet, interpreted that puzzling image as a “sign” of a soul in purgatory and decided to devote himself to specific studies on the subject. He travelled the world in search of documents and concrete evidence of the presence of the Purgatory. This worldwide search has provided the material to the curious and exceptional collection you can see in this church and in its small Museum. Today, the small museum displays fiery hand and fingerprints on robes, books and objects, each with its own amazing story.
