The history of the Italian Republic Day
The Italian Republic Day commemorates the referendum held in 1946, in which the Italian population were asked to vote to decide on the form of government following the Second World War and the fall of Fascism.
There are many events in Rome and the main ceremony includes the deposition of a laurel wreath as a tribute to the Italian Unknown Soldier at the Altare della Patria in Piazza Venezia by the President of the Italian Republic. In addition to this, there is an impressive military parade along Via dei Fori Imperiali. Also the Colosseum participates to the celebration. The firefighters unroll a huge flag on the Colosseum and it becomes a backdrop for the military parade. It is truly impressive.
