Why Toss a Coin into the Trevi Fountain?
One vacation in Rome is not enough to enjoy all its monuments and cultural and archaeological beauties. For this reason, every visitor hopes to return one day, perhaps to explore other, more unusual and less touristy places. If the wish if returning to Rome comes true, do take one of TOURS, we’ll take you to see those places that you might have missed in your first visit due to lack of time!
So, to ensure setting foot again in the eternal city, there is an ancient legend: just throw a coin into the Trevi Fountain. You have to turn your back to the basin, throw the coin, and, immediately turning around, try to see it in the moment before it disappears into the water. If this procedure runs smoothly, tradition has it that you will return to Rome.
Origins of the Coin Tossing Tradition
But who invented this “procedure”? Who said that throwing a coin into the Trevi Fountain will bring you back to Rome? The origins of this suggestive tradition are uncertain.
According to some sources, the custom is attributed to a well-known archaeologist from the 19th century, Wolfgang Helbig. After finishing his stay in Rome and being so sad about having to leave the city, he invented this “procedure” as an omen to return soon.
No one knows if he actually did return, but the legend says he did… and this is where the tradition started…
